Low Student Civic Participation

NAEPDC       News, Views, and Clues    May 31, 2012

RESOURCE:  Our colleagues in New England publish a social justice oriented bi-annual newsletter, The Change Agent, with resources for teachers to engage students in civic activities.  One issue (http://www.nelrc.org/changeagent/pdf/issue26/issue26.pdf) focused on voting and has activities to engage students in exercising their civic responsibilities.

They also have a page on “Teaching Democracy and Elections” at http://www.nelrc.org/changeagent/teachingaboutdemocracy.html

Considering the low participation by our students and the upcoming presidential election, you might want to encourage your local programs to integrate some of these resources into their classes.

In addition, your programs interested in social justice issues may want to subscribe to The Change Agent http://www.nelrc.org/changeagent/slidingscale.html
