ESOL Webinar Friday June 22

Forms Made Easy for English Language Learners

In this webinar the authors describe effective and interactive strategies for all English language learners who need to fill out forms, for example to enter the workforce. Presenters will explain how students record and organize their personal information, education, and employment history in the PDS (personal data sheet), and they will share various ways of collecting this information from even limited speakers of English. Presenters will also describe how the students use the PDS when completing forms, in class as well as independently after the class. Practicing filling out forms is often tedious and challenging for both students and teachers, so presenters will describe, with the help of PowerPoint slides and video, an innovative, hands-on, student-centered group activity where magnetic strips are applied by the participants to a magnetic board that replicates a job application. The activity appeals to tactile and kinesthetic learning styles, fosters problem solving, reinforces literacy skills, and links language learning to skills needed for practical real-life tasks.
